"Children change your world; change the world for them."
The BP BirthPlace Forest program enables parents to honour their children while recognizing the growth of our much needed urban forest and our increasing concern for the environment.
Launched in December 2000 by the City of Calgary Parks and its partners BP Canada Energy Company, Golden Acre Garden Sentres Ltd., and Alberta Health Services, the BP BirthPlace Forest program remains the first of its kind in Canada. It is the only free program of its kind and is the largest 'green' initiative in Calgary's history. This program is reshaping the way communities everywhere promote environmental sustainability.
Each year approximately 6000 trees are planted in honour of children born in Calgary. Parents can register their babies to be included in the current commemorative forest. All BP BirthPlace Forests are accessible to the public and can be enjoyed year-round. A celebration event is held each year for the forest registrants.
The program is currently under review. Registrations are being accepted for children born in 2009 or prior for inclusion in the 2009 forest.
