The City of Calgary: Recreation

Recreation Regulations

Animal & Bylaw Services

Recreational activities are regulated under multiple bylaws.  The majority of activities noted below are included in the Traffic Bylaw 26M96 PDF File (149 KB).

This page will provide an overview of these regulations, but please refer to the actual bylaw for more detailed information.  Original copies of the bylaw are available at the City Clerk's office.

What is the law?

  • Basketball nets, skateboard ramps and hockey nets are not permitted on City streets, even if only temporary (Street Bylaw 20M88 PDF File (106 KB)).
  • Skateboards or in-line skates are permitted on most City sidewalks or boulevards, unless otherwise posted, or within the Central Traffic Zone.
  • Children under the age of 14 may ride bicycles on the sidewalk.
  • In cases where a wheeled vehicle is permitted to be ridden on a City sidewalk or boulevard, it must be done so in a safe manner that does not interfere with pedestrians using the sidewalk.

Have a complaint?

Fines for contraventions of these regulations range between $25 and $300.  If you would like to report a bylaw infraction please:

  • Call 3-1-1 or 403-268-CITY (2489) - if calling from outside Calgary; or
  • Contact us
