Calgary Police Commission Community Policing Awards

Mission Statement: Honouring individuals and groups that contribute in an extraordinary way to improve police policy and/or the ability of the Calgary Police Service to serve the community.

The Calgary Police Commission Community Policing Awards were successfully introduced at the 2008 Calgary Police Commission Community Dinner and are designed to give recognition to citizens for their contributions to community policing and to a safe city.

Policing is most effective when the community helps the police to prevent crime, identify incidents and evidence of crime, and refine and improve policing strategies and services. To accomplish this, the police must foster and maintain positive relationships within the community that allow for two-way communication and collaborative problem solving.

The Calgary Police Commission adopts the following definition of community policing:

Community-based policing is a philosophy, management style and organizational strategy that promotes a strong partnership between the community and its police. It fosters a partnership in which the community has both the right and the responsibility to assist in the development of efficient and effective policing policies, priorities and practices, and the Police Service and the Police Commission have the responsibility to ensure that the Police Service policies are in place to meet the needs of the people of Calgary.

The awards are given to an individual and organized group or association or organization which has worked with the Calgary Police Service unselfishly and in the spirit of community policing to improve police policy and/or the ability of the Calgary Police Service to serve the community.

Nominees are evaluated on:

  • The time and/or effort required of the nominee to perform the work for which they are nominated.
  • The gap filled by the work, or the gap that would be left by the absence of the work. and
  • The value added to the Calgary Police Service, the Calgary Police Commission and/or the City of Calgary by their contribution
